SAINT JAMES

THE CITY

Saint-James located at the limits of three provinces (Normandy, Brittany, and Maine), is an historic fortified area which was founded by William the Conqueror.

Saint-James was a stage in the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

The TRICOTS SAINT-JAMES perpetuates an extensive tradition which goes back to the Middle-Ages with its weavers, and drapers.

So for many centuries Saint-James was a major place for wool production due to the sheep of the north Contentin and Mont Saint-Michel areas.

As a witness to a more recent past, Saint-James retains the memory of the sacrifice made by the 4,410 young Americans who came to fight and fall for Liberty. They lie in the American Military Cemetery, just like, a few kilometers away at Montjoie Saint-Martin, the eight North African soldiers, the first soldiers of the 2nd Armored Division of Field Marshall Leclerc to die on French soil.

Today Saint-James is the administrative center of the 3,000 inhabitant canton which, due to its flourishing economic activity boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates.

By bearing its name, TRICOTS SAINT-JAMES contributes to its worldwide reputation.

Saint-James is located at the junction of the "Estuaires" Motorway (A84) which connects the North of Europe with the South between Caen and Rennes, just 15 kilometers from the Mont Saint-Michel.
